Background

After receiving negative feedback, a legacy HVAC company needed to revamp the interface of their thermostat homeowner application.

Objective

Design a modern, user-friendly homeowner app and UI for a high-end smart thermostat.

Qualitative Interviews

Completed 6 remote interviews with current smart thermostat users to capture impressions on a range of existing layouts and interaction patterns for thermostat apps to determine benefits and challenges and inform the UI design for a new thermostat app.

Card Sorting

Developed a remote card sorting exercise to evaluate and rank a hypothesized set of thermostat application features for future development.

Usability Testing Sessions

Designed and conducted 8 usability testing sessions with thermostat users to elicit reactions to potential design patterns for a new application and UI screen design.

Research Synthesis & Reporting

Synthesized key learnings from qualitative interviews and usability testing sessions to provide recommendations on features for a first release of a new thermostat app as well as UI and screen design patterns.

Outcome

Through user research and testing, we helped the business down-select to a final design direction and UI for a new thermostat app based on brand fit, user perception, and usability.

Impact

The business is currently developing the first release of the new thermostat homeowner app, leveraging the screen and UI design assets provided by our team.
