After receiving negative feedback, a legacy HVAC company needed to revamp the interface of their thermostat homeowner application.
Objective
Design a modern, user-friendly homeowner app and UI for a high-end smart thermostat.
Approach
Qualitative Interviews
Completed 6 remote interviews with current smart thermostat users to capture impressions on a range of existing layouts and interaction patterns for thermostat apps to determine benefits and challenges and inform the UI design for a new thermostat app.
Card Sorting
Developed a remote card sorting exercise to evaluate and rank a hypothesized set of thermostat application features for future development.
Usability Testing Sessions
Designed and conducted 8 usability testing sessions with thermostat users to elicit reactions to potential design patterns for a new application and UI screen design.
Research Synthesis & Reporting
Synthesized key learnings from qualitative interviews and usability testing sessions to provide recommendations on features for a first release of a new thermostat app as well as UI and screen design patterns.
